Creating A RESTful WordCamp Speaker Finder App

February 27, 2017 by Michael Hull Leave a Comment

We’re creating a YouTube series that walks through the process of building a WordCamp Speaker Finder app using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery.  The video series is free to watch, and does not require advanced programming know-how or specialized knowledge of any framework.

We have broken the series down into small, digestible episodes.  We plan on adding episodes weekly until the series is complete.

You can either view the full playist on YouTube, or find a specific episode using the list below.

Episodes

00: Introduction
In the introduction video, we walk demonstrate what the finished product will look like after we’re done and explain the basic premise of the app.

01: Getting Speaker Data Via The WP REST API
As the first step in making our app, we setup our file structure and get some sample JSON data from wordcamp.org using an AJAX request.

02: Setting Up The Speaker Template
Here, we set up an HTML template within the DOM to insert our speaker data into.  We then grab a random speaker from our JSON results provided by wordcamp.org and integrate that speaker’s data with our template.

More To Come Soon

We have plenty more episodes to come, so follow us on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn to make sure you are in the know when we add new episodes to the series.

For those on GitHub, we also have the project’s code hosted there in a public repository.

If you have questions or feedback on the series, we’d love to hear about it.  Just leave us a comment here on our blog, or over at YouTube for the specific video you want to discuss.
